Residential and commercial areas in Alpine areas are often, like roads, railways and other infrastructures, directly affected by natural occurrences. If no alternative solutions are possible protective structures must be built. The differing conditions place extraordinary demands on their planning and execution.

Both spectacular damage, such as the landslip affecting the Cianross lift system at St. Vigil, and inconspicuous and relatively small problems along minor roads can present technicians with equally rigorous demands. Planning and realising the best possible safety standards while minimising costs and effort given the spatial, time and financial constraints is a fascinating challenge to which we enjoy applying our collective strengths, with the ultimate satisfaction provided by a successful solution. Such challenges nevertheless mean considerable responsibility. In the last analysis it is nature that stands over us all, determining the limits of human technical achievement.
